House tackling amendments, Senate Resources hearing endowment investment bill
The House is back on the floor, doing amendments to bills in its General Orders. Senate committees are meeting, including the Senate Resources Committee, which is now hearing HB 495 from Rep. John Vander Woude, R-Nampa, and Rep. Grant Burgoyne, D-Boise. to limit business investments by the state Land Board. "Government should not be out there competing in the private sector with all the advantages they have," Vander Woude told the senators.
Some on the panel are expressing concerns over the bill's constitutionality, and over whether it's proper for the Legislature to direct endowment investments; the Constitution places the Land Board in charge of those. Vander Woude said he thought different attorneys had different opinions. "It gives 'em one certain area where we think they've crossed the line," he said. The committee ran out of time before voting and will continue the hearing at its next meeting.
