Bill adds flex to school-building replacement fund
Here's a news item from the Associated Press: BOISE, Idaho (AP) ― The state Board of Education is seeking more flexibility in using a fund created in 2006 after Idaho's method of paying for school construction was deemed unconstitutional. The $25 million pool of money that was set aside by lawmakers has been used once, in northern Idaho's Plummer-Worley Joint School District. The district tapped more than $11 million to replace its elementary school, where a roof was in danger of collapse but voters wouldn't approve a bond. State Board of Education director Mike Rush sits on a panel that oversees the fund. He says the first-time use of the money highlighted a few issues that could be problematic, including the lack of a provision allowing the panel to access additional money should construction costs overrun. A bill headed to the Idaho House aims to fix that.
