Bill would let courts set time limits for redistricting appeals, no limits now…

Senate Majority Leader Bart Davis, R-Idaho Falls, today introduced legislation to allow courts to impose a time limit on redistricting appeals; under current law, legal challenges can be filed even years after redistricting plans have taken effect. "The purpose is to allow the court to set by rule ... like they do for other proceedings, an appeal time frame, to try and provide some finality," Davis told the Senate Judiciary Committee. He said House and Senate leaders have discussed the issue and want to introduce the bill for discussion and input. "I don't know yet whether we will advance it this year," he said, asking to "at least print it at this time and get it out for consideration." The committee unanimously agreed.
