Task force reverses itself, says ISP should keep its share of gas taxes

The legislative task force on alternative funding for ISP and state parks reversed itself today, after voting two weeks ago to propose a $10 vehicle registration fee increase to make up the Idaho State Police's lost funding when it loses gas tax funds. Now, the task force instead is backing a different move: Letting ISP keep its share of gas taxes permanently. That means no fee increase. The change of course came on a 6-1 vote at the task force's late-afternoon meeting today. The panel already had endorsed a permanent restoration of the portion of gas taxes going to parks for state trails programs.
