Spokane 7

Friday’s openings: Nature fights back

Academy Award nominations are going to be announced late next week, and a few of the big contenders are still hitting Spokane theaters in dribs and drabs. It’s also the time of year when Hollywood starts dumping some of its least desirable products. Ticket buyers, beware.

Here are your openings for the week:

“The Forest” – Inspired by the infamous “Suicide Forest” of Japan, this lazily titled horror film follows a young woman (Natalie Dormer from “Game of Thrones”) as she searches for her missing twin sister in a haunted wood.

“The Masked Saint” – After transferring to a failing church, a pastor returns to his professional wrestling past to make ends meet. It might sound like a ridiculous premise, but it’s actually based on a true story. Features the final screen appearance of the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

“The Revenant” – Pundits are already calling the Oscar race for best actor in Leonardo DiCaprio’s favor. The five-time nominee goes through hell and back in this brutal survival thriller, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who did pretty well for himself at last year’s Oscar ceremony.

At the Magic Lantern Theater:

“Labyrinth of Lies” – In post-WWII Germany, a young lawyer embarks on a then-controversial mission to prosecute surviving Nazi officers. Based on the career of prosecutor Fritz Bauer, the film is Germany’s official submission for a foreign language Oscar.
