Isn’t Holden Caulfield’s sister named Phoebe?

It's funny to think that the only literate person in the entire Inland Northwest is Phoebe Hurska. It must be so because this determined reader from Coeur d'Alene is the only member of The Spokesman-Review Book Club who, aside from me, is unafraid to regularly speak her mind.

In fact, she's the only one so far to say anything about “All But the Waltz,” Mary Clearman Blew's memoir of growing up in Montana that just happens to be June's selection of The Spokesman-Review Book Club. Not to mention the fact that she was the only one to say anything about May's read, Ursula Hegi's short-story collection “Hotel of the Saints.”

I wonder what she'll have to say about July's read, Chuck Palahniuk's “The Fight Club”?

Dan Webster

Dan Webster has filled a number of positions at The Spokesman-Review from 1981 to 2009. He started as a sportswriter, was a sports desk copy chief at the Spokane Chronicle for two years, served as assistant features editor and, beginning in 1984, worked at several jobs at once: books editor, columnist, film reviewer and award-winning features writer. In 2003, he created one of the newspaper's first blogs, "Movies & More." He continues to write for The Spokesman-Review's Web site, Spokane7.com, and he both reviews movies for Spokane Public Radio and serves as co-host of the radio station's popular movie-discussion show "Movies 101."
