These days, it’s not easy for a movie theater to make a go of it. That’s one reason why the Magic Lantern Theatre is branching out.

Example: At 5 today, the Lantern will host a combination book signing/presentation by nature photographer Amy Gulick.

Gulick’s book, a collection of interviews with people directly involved in the salmon industry, is “The Salmon Way: An Alaska State of Mind.” Copies of the book, provided by Auntie’s Bookstore, will be on hand for purchase.

The book-review site Kirkus Reviews, which described the books as “A rich, compelling look at a thriving yet increasingly threatened natural resource and those who depend on it,” had the following positive reaction:

Gulick’s “conversations with those who depend on salmon deftly show how the fish are a vital link in the state’s environmental and economic systems but also how they bind families and communities together. Few who read this illuminating book or see the author’s awe-inspiring color photographs will fail to come away with a sense that this is a way of life well worth preserving.”

Gulick will sign books beginning at 5, then at 6 will deliver her presentation. Space is limited, so RSVP here.
