WTF? Potatoes on pizza? Brilliant!
Wednesday evening Michelle and I found ourselves on the Flying Goat’s charming patio. We ordered a beer (go for the house beer, Horned Aviator, lovingly crafted by the folks at Northern Lights – it’s good. Trust me, I tried three pints to be sure) then settled in with the menu.
Here’s what I loved about their offerings: Almost everything on the menu is named after one of the Audubon neighborhood’s streets or places of interest. For example, there’s a salad called the Webster Meat (yes, we ordered it -- as if there was a choice), which features charred artichoke hearts, artisan pepperoni and prosciutto, and plenty of gorgonzola cheese (which I especially love when pronounced in a Wallace & Gromit accent … gar-GONE-zulluh).
We also opted for the Cleveland … a pizza with potatoes on top! No, I am not kidding. Two of my favorite food groups (pizza and potatoes) brought to the table by an adorably scruffy waiter (I must go out on a limb here and say the staff at the Flying Goat is probably, collectively, the prettiest staff I’ve yet to lay eyes on) – could life be any better? I didn’t think so. Until I took a great big bite of that potato-topped pie. OMG. A wood-fired crust hold truffle oil, garlic, caramelized onions, rosemary, Fontina cheese and roasted Yukon Golds together in a magical way that made me want to weep with joy. Instead I merely moaned in delight and took another bite.
You can find the Flying Goat at 3318 W. Northwest Blvd (across the street from the Downriver Grill). Carpool, run, walk, bike or take the bus because parking around the neighborhood is tricky. And on weekends plan for a bit of a wait (it’s worth it). The Goat is where it’s at.
