Timeline: Gonzaga's 25 years of Madness

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have been to the NCAA basketball tournament every year since in 1999. The team had been to the tournament before, in 1995, when they knocked off Portland to win the West Coast Conference championship, then lost in the first round. Their run since then has included 10 trips to the Sweet 16, four to the Elite Eight and two Final Four.

Zagnificent!

March 20, 1999

Led by Coach Dan Monson, the Gonzaga Bulldogs had the greatest season in their history, advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament before losing to eventual champion and top-seeded University of Connecticut. The 10th-seeded Bulldogs beat the 7th seeded Minnesota Golden Gophers, 75-63, in the first round; the 2nd seeded Stanford Cardinal, 82-74, in the second round and the 6th-seeded Florida Gators, 73-72, in the Sweet 16 before losing to top-seeded Connecticut. The team finished 28-7.

Slipper still fits

March 23, 2000

Led by Coach Mark Few in his first year with Gonzaga, the 10th-seeded Bulldogs returned to the Sweet 16, upsetting 7th-seeded Louisville, 77-66, and 2nd-seeded St. John's, 82-76, before losing to 6th-seeded Purdue, 75-66, in Albuquerque, N.M. The year marked the departure of the five seniors on the roster: Matt Santangelo, Richie Frahm, Axel Dench, Ryan Floyd and Mike Nilson. The Bulldogs ended the season 26-9.

Third straight Sweet 16

March 18, 2001

The 12th-seeded Bulldogs made a third straight Sweet 16 appearance and were almost knocked out in the first round game against the 5th-seeded University of Virginia until senior Casey Calvary put back a blocked shot to give GU a thrilling 86-85 victory. The Bulldogs went on to beat 13th-seeded Indiana State, 85-68, before being eliminated by defending champion and No. 1 seed Michigan State. At the end of the season, the Zags bid farewell to Calvary, whose thunderous dunks - one breaking a backboard - thrilled Kennel fans. The team ended the season 26-7.

Hitting a brick wall

March 14, 2002

After three great runs through the NCAA tournament, the 6th-seeded Zags had their tournament hopes ripped away when 11th-seeded Wyoming knocked them out in a first-round game, 73-66. The Zags shot 26 percent, making just 19 of 71 shots. It was a disappointing ending to the college career of point guard Dan Dickau, who had been named to the Associated Press' first-team All-America team earlier that week. The Zags ended the season 29-4.

Instant classic

March 22, 2003

The 9th seeded Zags beat Cincinnati, an 8 seed, in the first round, 74-69, then lost a two-overtime thriller to top-seeded Arizona, 96-95. Gonzaga's Blake Stepp missed a leaning 7-foot jumper that would have given the Bulldogs the biggest upset of the tournament. Zags said good-bye to seniors Zach Gourde and Winston Brooks, but retained powerful scoring with juniors Stepp, Cory Violette, Richard Fox, Tony Skinner and Kyle Bankhead, along with 6-10 sophomore starter Ronny Turiaf. The Zags ended the season 24-9.

Glass slipper on the other foot

A No. 2 seed, the Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the 15th-seeded Valparaiso, 76-49, in the first round, then lost to 10th seeded underdog Nevada, 91-72 in the second round. When GU beat Valparaiso, they extended a school-record winning streak, at that time the longest in the nation, to 21 games before losing to Nevada. The season featured the entrance of freshmen Adam Morrison and Derek Raivio. It also saw the Bulldogs ranked No. 3 nationwide in the AP college basketball poll before the NCAA tournament began. The team ended the season 28-3.

Stalled in second round

March 19, 2005

For the third consecutive year, the Bulldogs were a victory short of the Sweet 16. The third-seeded Zags (26-5) lost a second-round game, 71-69, to the sixth-seeded Red Raiders of Texas Tech (22-10) after first defeating 14th seeded Winthrop, 74-64. Sophomore Adam Morrison scored 25 points, and senior Ronny Turiaf, in the final game of his college career, scored 13. The team ended the season 26-5.

Heartbreaker

March 23, 2006

Led by Adam Morrison before he left school to became the No. 3 pick in the NBA draft, the third-seeded Bulldogs returned to the Sweet 16 for the first time in five years, only to lose a heartbreaker to UCLA. The Zags defeated 14th-seeded Xavier in the first round, 79-75, and 6th-seeded Indiana in the second round, 90-80, then lost to second-seeded UCLA, 73-71. In the final game of his college career, Morrison scored a game-high 24 points then collapsed to the floor in despair after teammate J.P. Batista’s last-second desperation shot from the left wing failed to fall. The Zags ended the season with a 29-4 record.

One and out

March 15, 2007

The 10th-seeded Zags lost to 7th-seeded Indiana in first round, 70-57. It was the final game for seniors Sean Mallon and Derek Raivio, who led the nation in free-throw percentage. Coach Mark Few commended the two players for not letting the Zags' streak of attending the NCAA tournament "end on their watch." The team suffered a setback when Josh Heytvelt and Theo Davis were suspended late in the season on drug charges. The team ended the season 23-11.

Curry too hot for Zags

March 21, 2008

The 7th-seeded Bulldogs lost to 10th-seeded Davidson in the first round, 82-76. Davidson's sophomore shooting guard, Stephen Curry, lit the Zags up for 40 points. Despite freshman Steven Gray's seven three-pointers, the Zags succumbed in what was the final game for seniors David Pendergraft and Abdullahi Kuso. The Zags ended the season 25-8.

Return to the Sweet 16

March 27, 2009

The 4th-seeded Bulldogs defeated 13-seed Akron in first round, 77-64, 12th-seeded Western Kentucky, 83-81, then lost to top-seeded North Carolina in the Sweet 16, 98-77. They finished the season 28-6. The thrilling win over Western Kentucky was capped with freshman Demetri "Meech" Goodson making a game-winning bank shot with 0.9 seconds left. The Zags ended the season 28-6.

Orange crush

March 21, 2010

The 8th-seeded Bulldogs beat the 9th-seeded Florida State in the first round, 67-60, then lost to the top-seeded Syracuse Orangemen, 87-65. Syracuse shot 54.7 percent and hit 12 three-pointers. The Zags bid farewell to senior Matt Bouldin who finished his collegiate career sixth in points (1,683), fifth in assists (444) and tied for third in steals with Jeremy Pargo (170). The team ended the season 27-7.

March 19, 2011

The 11th-seeded Bulldogs defeated the 6th-seeded St. John's in the first-round, 86-71, then lost to a hot third-seeded BYU team led by Jimmer Fredette, 89-67. Desite 18 points from Steven Gray in the final game of his collegiate career, along with 18 point from Elias Harris and 17 from Robert Sacre, it wasn't enough to overcome a BYU team that finished 14 of 28 on 3-pointers and 52.5 percent from the field. The Cougars also scored 20 points off Gonzaga's 15 turnovers. The Bulldogs finished the season 25-10.

Buckeyes too crafty for Zags

March 17, 2012

The 7th-seed Bulldogs crushed 10th-seeded West Virginia in the first round, 77-54, then lost to second-seeded Ohio State, 73-66, in the second round. The Bulldogs especially had trouble with the Buckeyes' sophomore point guard, Aaron Craft, who scored 17 points and had 10 assists. The game featured the new freshman backcourt team of Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell, Jr., who scored 18 points, tying the Buckeyes Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas for game-high honors. The game was the final one for seniors Rob Sacre and Marquise Carter. The Zags ended the season 26-7.

Wichita St. sends Zags home early

March 23, 2013

Wichita State buried a string of 3-pointers and the top-ranked and top-seeded Zags didn’t have a response in the closing minutes of the game. The Shockers -- a No. 1 seed this year -- ended Gonzaga’s season with a 76-70 victory, leaving the Zags stunned and dismissed from the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight season in the round of 32.

Arizona bounces Zags from round of 32

March 17, 2014

It began smoothly enough with post-up baskets by Przemek Karnowski and Sam Dower Jr. on Gonzaga’s first two possessions. But the mistakes came next and Gonzaga couldn’t stem the flood of turnovers. Each one, a pass into traffic, a fumble on the perimeter, put Arizona into overdrive toward the other end of the court. Gonzaga turnover, Arizona basket. It was the story of the first half and ultimately the game as the opportunistic Wildcats rolled to an 84-61 victory. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs (29-7) were bounced out of the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight season in the round of 32.

Just out of reach

March 30, 2015

The top-seeded Duke Blue Devils executed in crunch time and pulled away for a 66-52 Elite Eight victory, ending Gonzaga’s record-setting season. The Zags’ offense, so dependable all season but inconsistent during several costly stretches against Duke, stacked up empty possessions. Duke did what Duke has done so often in big NCAA tournament games, delivering at both ends of the floor.

Chance at Elite Eight slips away

March 25, 2016

The 11th-seeded Zags were denied a second consecutive trip to the Elite Eight when they let a 57-48 lead slip through their fingers in the final 6:20. “We let this one slip,” senior Kyle Wiltjer said. “This was a winnable game and we lost.” The Zags had ample opportunities to do that, but they couldn’t keep Syracuse off the boards, they gave up the ball and ultimately the game, 63-60 . No. 10 Syracuse closed the game on a 15-3 run to end GU’s season.

UNC beats Gonzaga in championship game

April 3, 2017

North Carolina scored the final eight points to overtake Gonzaga, claiming the Tar Heels’ sixth national championship with 71-65 victory in front of 76,168 for the NCAA championship game at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The Zags (37-2) were right in position with 1:50 remaining after a Nigel Williams-Goss bank shot put them on top 65-63. The junior guard scored Gonzaga’s last eight points. But the Tar Heels (33-7), frigid from the field most of the night, made three of their last four attempts, and they retained possession after the lone miss.

Fourth-seeded Gonzaga, playing without injured starting forward Killian Tillie, fell behind early and could never chase down the ninth-seeded Florida State Seminoles. Gonzaga’s NCAA Tournament run ended in the Sweet 16 as FSU led for nearly 33 minutes during a 75-60 Seminoles victory in front of 19,181 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Time ran out on top-seeded Gonzaga’s season with a bitter 75-69 loss to Texas Tech at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The third-seeded Red Raiders stormed the floor to celebrate the school’s first trip to the Final Four. The top-seeded Zags’ hopes of reaching the Final Four ended one win short. Their dreams of the program’s first national championship three wins out of reach.

Gonzaga saw its undefeated season and second chance at a national title erased quickly as Baylor raced to a 86-0 victory at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs rolled to the final four with four straight double digit victories, before beating UCLA 93-90 in overtime on Jalen Suggs' 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Bulldogs (31-1) were attempting to become the first unbeaten national champion since Indiana in 1976.

The Bulldogs' (28-4) offense relied heavily on Drew Timme, who scored 17 second-half points, but couldn't complete the comeback against the Razorbacks the same way they did against Memphis in the second round.
