College baseball: Gonzaga pours on offense to beat San Diego

Guthrie Morrison went 4 for 6 with five RBIs, and Gonzaga beat San Diego 15-3 on Saturday at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Troy Johnston, Jack Machtolf and Daniel Frederickson added two RBIs apiece for the Bulldogs (11-12, 4-4 West Coast Conference), who scored six in the sixth inning and four in the seventh to pull away.

Jeff Houghtby gave the Toreros (18-9, 4-4) a brief lead with a two-run homer in the third.

Stanford 8, Washington State 5: Tim Tawa homered and drove in four runs, and the No. 3 Cardinal (17-3, 5-0 Pac-12) rallied to defeat the Cougars (6-19, 0-5) at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Andrew Daschbach batted 3 for 4 and added three runs for Stanford, which overcame a 5-2 deficit.

Collin Montez, Garrett Gouldsmith and Koby Blunet each had RBI singles during a three-run third-inning rally, staking WSU to its lead.

Whitworth 1-2, PLU 0-1: Austin Rice threw seven two-hit innings with six strikeouts, and the Pirates (14-10, 11-3, Northwest Conference) opened a doubleheader with a win over the Lutes (16-10, 8-6) in Tacoma.

Ben Wintringer drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the third.

In the second game, Matthew Young tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts as the Pirates completed the sweep.

The Pirates rallied for two runs in the second, as Jaxsen Sweum singled in a run and Wintringer had a sacrifice fly.
