Area roundup: WSU women’s soccer team finishes nonconference schedule with perfect mark

Morgan Weaver scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season and 16th-ranked Washington State’s women’s soccer team scored a 4-1 victory over Cal Poly in Pullman on Sunday to finish a perfect nonconference season.

Brianna Alger and Alysha Overland also scored for the Cougars (7-0-0), who tied their record set in 2015 for consecutive wins to start a season.

WSU opens Pac-12 play Friday at No. 8 UCLA.

Kelsee Winston made five saves for Eastern Washington (4-3-2) in a 0-0 draw with South Dakota State (5-4-1) in Cheney. EWU put seven shots on goal but was turned back by the Jackrabbits goaltender.

The Eagles open Big Sky play on Friday against visiting Sacramento State.

Oregon (6-1-1) scored two first-period goals in taking a 2-0 victory over Idaho in Eugene. The Vandals (3-5-1) open Big Sky play at home Friday night against Portland State.

Tayla MacPherson scored in the 53rd minute for Whitworth (3-1-1, 1-0-1 Northwest Conference) but Puget Sound (2-3-0, 1-0-1) scored less than a minute later in a match that ended in a 1-1 tie in Tacoma. Molly Webster made 10 saves for the visiting Pirates.

Men’s soccer

Drew Wilson and Tyler Pangia scored goals less than three minutes apart and Whitworth (3-4-1, 2-0 Northwest Conference) went on to a 2-1 victory over Pacific (1-3-1, 0-2) in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Hockey

Nate Wilson scored the lone goal for Spokane (1-2-0-0-1, 3 points) in a 4-1 loss to the visiting Beaver Valley Nitehawks (2-2-0-0, 4) in KIJHL play.
