Gonzaga baseball honors Steve Hertz then edges New Mexico State 2-1
Gonzaga rose to the occasion on Friday, the day the Bulldogs’ baseball complex was renamed for former player and longtime coach Steve Hertz.
The Bulldogs (25-20) defeated New Mexico State (33-17) 2-1 on a two-run home run by Jake Vieth and a solid pitching performance by Daniel Bies, Calvin LeBrun and Casey Legumina.
Bies pitched 6 innings, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. LeBrun faced a minimum three batters in working through the seventh, and Legumina allowed just one hit with two strikeouts in two innings. His save was his school-record 13th this season, breaking a tie with Wyatt Mills (2017) and Cody Martin (2011).
The three-game nonconference series continues at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
