Prep notebook: North Central, Shadle Park make coaching hires
North Central has named three new coaches while continuing its search for a new football coach, according to athletic Director David Hall.
The Indians hired Whitney Abell as volleyball coach, Tim Lamanna as girls basketball coach and Christine Lester as fastpitch softball coach.
Abell comes to Spokane from Todd Beamer HS. She has five years of coaching experience and played semiprofessional volleyball following her college career at Central Washington. Abell replaces Patrick Rausch, who resigned. NC went 0-15 last season.
Lamanna was the NC girls JV basketball coach last season. He takes over for Jake Martyn, who resigned. NC girls went 13-12 overall and 6-6 in the GSL.
Lester adds fastpitch duties next season after guiding the slowpitch squad last fall to a 6-14 record. NC fastpitch went 2-19, 2-16 this season.

The Highlanders hired Arnold Brown as boys basketball coach, athletic director Bruce Hafferkamp confirmed. Brown was most recently the boys coach at 2A Wapato HS.
Brown guided the Wolves to a 32-15 record the past two seasons. Wapato reached the state tournament as the seventh seed in 2017, but was upset in the first round by 15th seeded Prosser.
Brown previously coached Medical Lake boys for 13 seasons. He replaces Elijah Gurash, who resigned last month. Shadle finished 5-14, 2-10 last season.
