Recap and highlights: Admiral Schofield, No. 7 Tennessee topple top-ranked Gonzaga 76-73 at the Colangelo Classic in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Admiral Schofield poured in 30 points, including the winning 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining and No. 7 Tennessee battled back to defeat No. 1 Gonzaga 76-73 on Saturday in the Jerry Colangelo Classic at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Gonzaga had two chances to tie the game near the end of regulation, but Zach Norvell Jr. and Rui Hachimura were unable to connect from 3-point range as the Volunteers (7-1) completed the upset.

Gonzaga led by as many as nine points in the second half, but made just one of its last seven shots from the floor and no field goals in the final 4:16.

Brandon Clarke and Hachimura each scored 21 points for the Bulldogs (9-1), while Josh Perkins dished out nine assists.

Clarke also grabbed nine rebounds, blocked two shots and had three steals for the Zags.

Grant Williams added 16 points for Tennessee before fouling out with two minutes remaining.

Gonzaga shot 45.8 percent from the floor and 38.9 percent from 3-point range, while the Vols were 40.3 percent overall and 41.4 percent from deep.

Gonzaga will travel to North Carolina on Saturday for a rematch of the 2017 national championship game against the Tar Heels (4 p.m., ESPN2).

Second half

Final – Tennessee 76, Gonzaga 73: Rui Hachimura gets a shot off to try for the tie, but he can’t connect and seventh-ranked Tennessee knocks off No. 1 Gonzaga

0:07 – Tennessee 76, Gonzaga 73: Zach Norvell Jr. gets the shot off, but his 3-pointer is missed and UT gets the board and is fouled. Kyle Alexander to the line for a 1-and-1 after Gonzaga’s final timeout.

0:17 – Tennessee 76, Gonzaga 73: Admiral Schofield again drills the 3-pointer, this time from straight away. Zags look to get a quick two, but can’t get to the basket forcing GU to take a timeout.

0:30 – Tennessee 73, Gonzaga 73: Rui Hachimura fouled on the next Gonzaga possession and he knocks down both shots from the free-throw line to tie the game up. Tennessee takes a time out with 30 seconds left on the game clock and 14 left on the shot clock.

1:09 – Tennessee 73, Gonzaga 71: Zags pound the ball inside and are getting to the free-throw line.

First foul out is a big one as Tennessee’s Grant Williams picks up his fifth.

Admiral Schofield banks in another triple though and the Vols go back on top.

Schofield now up to 27 points.

3:13 – Gonzaga 68, Tennessee 68: And just like that it’s all tied up as Grant Williams gets an easy bucket followed by another Admiral Schofield 3-pointer in transition.

3:43 – Gonzaga 68, Tennessee 63: Four Gonzaga players in double figures now (Rui Hachimura 19, Brandon Clarke 18, Zach Norvell Jr. and Corey Kispert 13 each.

Jordan Bowden becomes the third Vols player in double figures with 11 points after connecting on a pair of 3-pointers.

Zags shooting nearly 54 percent from the floor this half, while holding Tennessee to 38.7 percent.

GU got its lead up to nine points, but again Tennessee has found answers.

7:08 – Gonzaga 61, Tennessee 55: Tennessee temping fate most of the half by leaving Zach Norvell Jr. open outside in its zone defense, and “Snacks” finally makes them pay. The sophomore wing hits back-to-back 3-pointers as he’s up to 13 points.

Admiral Schofield with another triple though for the Vols and he’s up to 19 points.

Tennessee has done a nice job of pulling back to within a few possessions after GU make a little run.

Josh Perkins up to eight assists for the Zags, but has yet to score (0-5 FG).

11:49 – Gonzaga 49, Tennessee 48: Tennessee just won’t go away as the Vols claw back to within one after an Admiral Schofield 3-pointer in transition. He’s up to 12 points.

Tennessee’s Kyle Alexander up to four fouls, but he’s mostly been a nonfactor today. Only other player in foul trouble is UT’s Grant Williams with three.

Zags dominating in the paint (24-12), but the Vols have the slight advantage in second-chance points (10-9).

15:23 – Gonzaga 45, Tennessee 40: Two quick buckets to start the half for Brandon Clarke, who is up to 11 points. Clarke then goes SportsCenter Top-10 on Yves Pons with one of the biggest blocks we’ve seen this season.

Corey Kispert joins Rui Hachimura and Clarke in double figures for GU with 11 points.

Halftime

First half

Halftime – Tennessee 34, Gonzaga 33: Great response from the top-ranked Bulldogs after being down nine points in the opening minutes. Tennessee storms back in the final two minutes with a 7-0 run to grab the halftime lead.

Rui Hachimura only padding his Player of the Year resume with 14 first-half points on 6 of 9 shooting. The junior also has four rebounds.

Grant Williams leads Tennessee with 12 points and seven boards.

Zags shoot 46.4 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from deep in the first 20 minutes, while the Vols shoot 35.3 percent overall and 36.4 percent from 3-point range.

GU with 20 rebounds, eight assists and five turnovers, while Tennessee had 20 boards, 10 assists and three turnovers.

3:18 – Gonzaga 33, Tennessee 27: Great hands from Gonzaga players on the defensive end is leading to easy points on offense

Another GU steal falls to the feet of Josh Perkins, who picks up his sixth assist of the game on a corner 3-pointer from Corey Kispert.

Tennessee looks lost on offense outside of Grant Williams, who has 10 points.

Rui Hachimura leading all scorers with 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting.

Bulldogs shooting 54 percent from the floor and 57 percent from 3-point range. Vols at 35.5 percent overall and 40 percent from deep.

7:55 – Tennessee 21, Gonzaga 20: Another nice showing off the bench by Filip Petrusev for the Zags. The freshman big is up to five points on 2 of 2 shooting.

Brandon Clarke starting to assert himself into the game on both ends of the floor. He has two steals and two points.

Rui Hachimura leads Gonzaga with seven points, including a 3-pointer.

Vols have made just one of their last 10 shots and haven’t scored in the last 2:06. At this rate, Tennessee will want to keep this one a defensive affair.

Tennessee winning the battle on the boards (13-10) and have three turnovers to GU’s 4.

11:31 – Tennessee 19, Gonzaga 13: Bulldogs starting to settle in on the defensive end as Tennessee is cooling off on the offensive end. GU going to the bench early as Filip Petrusev and Greg Foster Jr. get some key minutes to spell Zach Norvell Jr. and Brandon Clarke.

Zags shooting 41.7 percent from the floor in the early going.

13:26 – Tennessee 19, Gonzaga 11: Not an ideal start for the top-ranked Bulldogs, as Tennessee hits a 3-pointer on its first possession, forces a GU turnover and then grabs a pair of offensive rebounds. Zags nearly turn it over again, but an over-and-back call is overturned.

Volunteers also pressing the Zags on made shots, forcing GU into some tough full-court decisions. Tennessee forces nearly 15 turnovers a game.

UT’s Grant Williams and Yves Pons with seven points each, while Corey Kispert has six for the Zags.

Vols shooting 61.5 percent from the floor and 60 percent from deep.
