Teen killed in head-on collision north of Bonners Ferry

An 18-year-old driver was killed Monday afternoon after striking another vehicle head-on north of Bonners Ferry.

Spencer L. Ritchie, of Calgary, Alberta, was driving a gray 2007 BMW on U.S. Highway 95 near milepost 534 when the Idaho State Police said his vehicle crossed the centerline, hit a 2017 Ford Expedition and left the road down an embankment.

Ritchie was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Expedition, 39-year-old Daniel D. Machado, of Manteca, California, was airlifted to Kootenai Health. His wife and four juveniles in the SUV sustained minor injuries.

Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
