College soccer roundup: Freshman’s first goal gives Gonzaga women 2-1 win at Denver
Freshman Maggie Conners’ scored her first collegiate goal in the 77th minute to lift the Gonzaga women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host Denver on Sunday.
Denver (3-3-1) took the lead with a goal in the 58th minute before India Jencks scored off a cross from Sophia Viviano 33 seconds later to tie for the Zags (5-1-1).
Cal State Northridge 2, Eastern Washington 0: Marissa Favela and Amy Aquino scored for the Matadors (3-1-4) in their victory over the Eagles (4-4-0) in Cheney.
The Eagles were shut out at home for the first time since Oct. 18, 2015, a 1-0 loss to Southern Utah. EWU outshot Cal State Northridge 25-12 with the Eagles putting six shots on target.
Carroll 1, Whitworth 0: Madison Apsey’s goal in the 21st minute gave the Saints (2-2) a win over the Pirates (1-3) in Spokane.
Whitworth outshot Carroll 10-9 with the Pirates putting three shots on target.
It was the Pirates’ final nonconference match.
Men’s soccer
Seattle 2, Gonzaga 0: Cody Gibson scored goals in each half and the Redhawks (4-1) took the victory over the No. 22-ranked Zags (3-2) in Spokane.
Seattle took one more shot than Gonzaga (10-9) but had a 5-2 advantage on shots on goal.
Carroll 2, Whitworth 1 (2OT): Austin Cassity scored in the ninth minute for the Pirates (1-3-0) but Rodrigo Portillo tied the match for the Saints (2-1-0) in the 54th and Kyle Thomson won it for Carroll with a goal in the 105th in Spokane.
