Simple bicycling tips
Virginia Pearsall had the misfortune to cross paths with a cyclist named Justin Haller on the Centennial Trail in Kendall Yards. Haller’s recklessness deserves to be called out. I am an experienced cyclist and used to live in Kendall Yards. I ride there often. Haller screwed up. Let me count some of the ways:
1. On a crowded trail, slow down, even if you “hate to slow down.”
2. Holler “on your left” to alert pedestrians that you are coming by. “Hot Pizza” is an absurd warning, providing no useful information.
3. Pass on the left, not on the right.
4. If you have a broken wrist, making it difficult to apply the brakes, don’t ride in congested areas.
5. When you screw up and hit someone, do not scream like a banshee. Offer profuse apologies and a helping hand.
Haller has suffered 25 broken bones. That tells you all you need to know about his cycling habits. Most cyclists ride responsibly. Haller’s conduct brings unwarranted discredit on the entire cycling community. Here’s hoping Pearsall heals quickly and Haller stays off his bike. He deserves to have his comeuppance in court.
