Washington State football chat transcript - 10/18

srchat (Admin): Welcome to the live chat. I’ll be here for the next hour. Thanks for popping in. Oct 18, 10:01 AM Guest5541 (Guest): Are you concerned that the TMJ issue could be something bigger within the team? Was it related to his in game or post game attitude? Do you anticipate he will be back for Arizona? Oct 18, 10:03 AM srchat (Admin): I can’t really speak to any of that. The team seems upbeat and focused this week. I’ll be interested to see how they respond vs. Colorado. Oct 18, 10:03 AM Guest970 (Guest): Dimitry has big shoes to fill on Saturday, see flashes of talent, how has he look in the Summer and Fall ?..4.5 guy or slower ? Oct 18, 10:07 AM srchat (Admin): There’s a lot of raw talent there. Not sure he’s a 4.5 guy, but he certainly has the physical tools to be a contributor. I think it’s probably more of a mental deal with him. Oct 18, 10:07 AM Uncle Larry (Guest): Will we ever see the real Luke Falk this year or is this the real Luke Falk? Oct 18, 10:11 AM srchat (Admin): Whoever stole Luke’s powers during the Cal game should kindly return them before the Colorado game. That wasn’t the Luke we’ve seen the majority of the year and that isn’t the Luke I presume we’ll see moving forward. Oct 18, 10:11 AM Guest3492 (Guest): Does the team seem different this week after their first loss compared to previous weeks? Oct 18, 10:12 AM srchat (Admin): Not particularly. And I don’t think they looked any different last week. Mike Leach told us the same after Cal. I don’t think you can trace many of the flaws from the Cal game to anything that happened during practice. Oct 18, 10:13 AM Guest6135 (Guest): Who is grumpier? Vince Grippi or Blanchette? Oct 18, 10:13 AM srchat (Admin): Take it back. Oct 18, 10:13 AM Guest210 (Guest): What’s the fix for the Online? They’ve under performed all season with Friday (hopefully) being the apex of that lack of effort. Oct 18, 10:15 AM srchat (Admin): Toughness is the thing the coaches keep bringing up. How to fix that? I imagine we’ll talk to Clay McGyuire today after practice to get a better sense. Check for the video interviews later. Oct 18, 10:16 AM Guest970 (Guest): Pippen’s lost his starting job, Singelton now number 2 at SS, how has he looked, Talbot redshirting ? Oct 18, 10:20 AM srchat (Admin): Talbott’s played this year, so he won’t be redshirting. Hard to gauge Singleton. Hasn’t really shown up on the stat sheet in the limited time he’s been on the field. Just one tackle in the Oregon game. Oct 18, 10:20 AM badmataafa (Guest): Any idea why CML didn’t put Hilinski in in the 2nd half (a la Boise St.) to get into a different rhythm against CAL, when every bounce seemed to go their way? Oct 18, 10:23 AM srchat (Admin): I was wondering if that might happen, too. I’m guessing Leach wanted to let Falk work out of it this time. Seems like Hilinski may have been able to elude a few of those sacks… Oct 18, 10:25 AM Guest3492 (Guest): Who has been the most impressive redshirting guy that you’ve noticed in practice? Oct 18, 10:25 AM srchat (Admin): I don’t watch practice, but I know Travell Harris has been a standout in the Thursday Night Football sessions. A few assistants have mentioned his name. Oct 18, 10:26 AM JFM Cougs (Guest): Do the coaches talk to Falk about having a mental time clock to get rid of the ball? Is Mele having a tough time finding someone who can punt the ball at least 30 yards? Oct 18, 10:28 AM srchat (Admin): Leach told us yesterday they’re addressing the punting issues this week. Said they’d have “between 0-3 guys punting this weekend” so not really sure what they have in store. Regarding Falk, I’m sure it isn’t something they have to remind him. Oct 18, 10:28 AM Uncle Larry (Guest): Could someone please teach the O line how to hand off pass rushers/blitzers? Oct 18, 10:31 AM srchat (Admin): ^ Another concept the O-line’s struggled with… Oct 18, 10:31 AM Guest970 (Guest): What 8 starting wr’s are in line for the Buffs, Brandon laid a heck of a block, Wicks has a great game against Oregon and then quiet again Oct 18, 10:32 AM srchat (Admin): Wait … what EIGHT wide receivers are the Buffs starting? Was that the question here? Oct 18, 10:32 AM WSU 04 (Guest): I don’t see Riley Krenz on the depth chart. He looked really good this spring, what have you seen from him at practice this year? Need to get our Wes Welker on the field! Oct 18, 10:33 AM srchat (Admin): I’ve got to be honest, that’s a name I didn’t write once during fall camp. He’s buried pretty deep on the depth chart. Oct 18, 10:33 AM badmataafa (Guest): I’ve finally noticed a little play action and I’m wondering with the OL play being the way it’s been do we see more of that and perhaps more quick game (slants, etc.) moving forward to get the D from just teeing off Oct 18, 10:34 AM srchat (Admin): Anything to get the ball out of Luke’s hands quickly, right? The tunnel screens have been pretty effective this year, too… Oct 18, 10:34 AM Guest970 (Guest): Who are the RB’s for next year other than James and Harrington, ?…concerning as its a positon that takes a lot of hits/reps and Keith is not really a strong pass blocker Oct 18, 10:37 AM srchat (Admin): Those two and Solomon Cooper. There’s good reason to worry a little about the depth there. Oct 18, 10:37 AM Uncle Larry (Guest): What adjustments must Leach make (like Leach makes adjustments “just do your job”) to slow down the pass rush cause I don’t see the O line making improvements this year? Oct 18, 10:39 AM srchat (Admin): Personnel wise, I’m not sure there’s an obvious adjustment. The five starters are clearly the best five O-linemen WSU has to offer. It still seems that group isn’t as cohesive as it could be. The coaches talk a lot about being choreographed. They didn’t look that way versus Cal. And I mentioned the toughness earlier. Oct 18, 10:39 AM Guest970 (Guest): my apologies..who are now the 2 deeps at wr for the cougs with martin out Oct 18, 10:44 AM srchat (Admin): Oh gotcha. Yeah, so at the “X” it’ll be Dimry and Tay Martin. At the “Y” Kyle Sweet and Jamire Calvin. At the “H” Renard Bell and Brandon Arconado. At the “Z” IJM and Dez Patmon. Oct 18, 10:44 AM badmataafa (Guest): Is Wicks currently in witness protection? Oct 18, 10:46 AM srchat (Admin): Has been a strange season for him. He hinted after the Oregon game that he’d been banged up. The fact he got just a single carry on Friday makes me think he still is. Oct 18, 10:46 AM Guest970 (Guest): where has Kingston been ? Oct 18, 10:48 AM srchat (Admin): In Jamaica, like it’s always been. Just kidding. He hasn’t played since Oregon State, so I’ll let you come to your own conclusion there… Oct 18, 10:48 AM JFM Cougs (Guest): Isn’t Caleb Perry redshirting this year? I hope he would get the nod over Cooper who’s a walk-on? From what I understand Perry is a speedster and promising running back they also have Mac Borghi who is a highly touted running back from Colorado coming in. Oct 18, 10:49 AM srchat (Admin): Perry is redshirting. I’m sure they hope he’s good enough to at least spell Williams at times next season. Otherwise it’ll just be the “Boobie Show.” Oops, did I just say that? Oct 18, 10:49 AM Ryan Camp: Any idea why Tavares Martin Jr. was suspended? Oct 18, 10:50 AM srchat (Admin): Nope, sorry. But there’s three things that get you booted from Mike Leach’s football team so we can presume it wasn’t one of those. Oct 18, 10:50 AM GoCougs (Guest): You know who has been amazing? Jamal Morrow. Can we maybe give him the ball a few more times a game??? Oct 18, 10:51 AM srchat (Admin): This is not a bad thought. Oct 18, 10:51 AM Guest970 (Guest): Was losing Riley and Middelton a bigger loss than we thought ? Oct 18, 10:52 AM srchat (Admin): Both were big losses, indeed. Not sure if Mauigoa does what Riley did from a leadership standpoint. Your center should be, if not the most, one of the most vocal guys on the offensive line. Oct 18, 10:52 AM JFM Cougs (Guest): I’m surprised that they play Arcanado as much as they do, he’s a walk-on with very little talent, defensive coaches have to know that when he’s in they are either running it or definitely not throwing him the ball. Oct 18, 10:54 AM srchat (Admin): I think Arconado does some good things. He isn’t an elite talent, no, but they aren’t extremely deep at inside receiver and they didn’t feel Easop or Travell were quite ready to make the leap. Oct 18, 10:55 AM Uncle Larry (Guest): Where can WSU attack the Buffs on defense and offense? Oct 18, 10:57 AM srchat (Admin): Ryan Nall rushed for a bunch against them last week. OSU rushed for almost 300 as a team I think. Could be a big game for Morrow/Williams. I don’t think Steven Montez is an elite passer, per se, so the Cougars might try to stack the box to stop Phillip Lindsay who’ll be the best back they see until Bryce Love. Oct 18, 10:57 AM WSU 04 (Guest): Riley Krenz, remember the name! Oct 18, 10:57 AM srchat (Admin): Will do. Oct 18, 10:58 AM Guest970 (Guest): What, Brendan has no talent ?..your wrong on that one JFM Oct 18, 10:58 AM srchat (Admin): Arconado did have the block of the season in the Cal game. Coaches love his effort/intangibles. Oct 18, 10:58 AM srchat (Admin): Any final questions out there? Oct 18, 10:59 AM Uncle Larry (Guest): What is the uni combo this week. Which one won? Oct 18, 11:00 AM srchat (Admin): It looks like they haven’t announced that yet. What do you guys want to see uniform wise? Oct 18, 11:00 AM Guest970 (Guest): is harper starting on Saturday and who benefits more from the bad weather forecasted Oct 18, 11:01 AM srchat (Admin): Molton’s the listed starter. We’ll see if he’s healthy though… Oct 18, 11:01 AM Uncle Larry (Guest): Do you really believe that the players believing the hype (outside noise) was really why they played so bad? Oct 18, 11:03 AM srchat (Admin): No … A bunch of things went wrong early and it snowballed. Cal was the better team/deserved the win, but what happens if Bell’s return TD isn’t called back? What happens if Falk isn’t picked off twice inside Cal’s 30-yard line? Lot of huge point swings in this game… Oct 18, 11:03 AM Uncle Larry (Guest): What do you think Leach said to the team after the Cal game? Probably just looked at them, shook his head, and walked out. Oct 18, 11:04 AM srchat (Admin): Yeah, probably not too many “good games” or butt slaps after that one. Oct 18, 11:04 AM Guest970 (Guest): so who benefits more from the bad weaher ? Oct 18, 11:06 AM srchat (Admin): Oh sorry… Colorado is better on the ground so I’ll say them. Oct 18, 11:06 AM Guest970 (Guest): what out for coach macs kid, they have some talented wrs and he is underated. Oct 18, 11:07 AM srchat (Admin): Looks like there’s four of them who’ve had good years statistically. He’s one of those four. Oct 18, 11:07 AM srchat (Admin): Thanks for joining this week! Check the site later for a transcript of today’s chat.
