Volleyball notebook: Gonzaga Prep and Mead still undefeated in league late in season

With just a couple of weeks left in the regular season, the top of the Greater Spokane League volleyball standings are still jammed with teams trying to sort themselves out.

Gonzaga Prep and Mead are both undefeated at 5-0, while Central Valley (5-1) and University (4-1) are just a game behind in the loss column.

Prep beat Lewis and Clark last week in straight sets, and in fact hasn’t lost a set since beating Mt. Spokane on Sept. 19. Mead swept Rogers and hasn’t lost a set all season.

The Bullpups host University in a big match on Thursday, while Mead is at Central Valley. These pair of matches could really simplify things among the leaders, or just add to the confusion.

Meanwhile, the match of the season looms on Oct. 17 when Prep and Mead face off.

Mead is lead by 5-foot-8 outside hitter Maddie Lee, who has several double-digit kill efforts to her credit this season, and setter Lindsey Russell. Gonzaga Prep is lead by 5-foot-7 outside hitter Kate Budig and setter Emily Zink.

Idaho 5A

District playoffs start next week and seeds are settled.

Lake City is the cream of the crop and finished league play at 6-0, followed by Lewiston (3-3), Post Falls (2-4) and Coeur d’Alene (1-5). District 1-2 has one automatic berth to state on Oct. 27-28, and second place faces a play-in game against District 3’s fifth place team.

State playoffs for all classifications are in North Idaho this year.
