WSU’s run in NCAA soccer playoffs ends with golden goal by Florida Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Deanne Rose scored a golden goal in the 104th minute to give Florida at 1-0 victory over Washington State in the third round of the NCAA playoffs on Sunday.

After a scoreless 10-minute overtime, Deanne Rose got behind the Cougars’ backline in the second OT and scored, just the Gators’ second shot on goal.

The Cougars (10-8-4) outshot Florida 6-1 in the first half and the Gators (17-6-0) reversed that stat in the second half.

The Cougars had good scoring chances in the first half just miss including a breakaway shot by Elyse Bennett that crossed the face of the goal before going inches wide.

In the first overtime, WSU’s Morgan Weaver had a shot tipped up and away by leaping Florida goaltender Kaylan Marckese, who finished with four saves.

Washington State goalie Ella Dederick had one save.

This was the deepest postseason run for the Cougars in program history.

WSU coach Todd Shulenberger sees a bright future.

“We had six freshman that I believed played today … three of them started,” Schulenberg said. “The future is bright. … It was good to get these young groups these kind of games and these kind of minutes.”
