Area roundup: Washington State baseball sweeps Cal State Northridge

Ryan Walker pitched six scoreless innings in the second game to help Washington State (13-7) sweep a nonconference doubleheader over visiting Cal State Northridge (11-12) on Saturday.

Walker (2-2) allowed five hits and a walk, striking out six, in a 3-0 win. J.J. Hancock went 2 for 4 with a two-run double.

In the early game, an 11-7 win, James Rudkin had a two-run double and drove in four total while Shane Matheny went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Oregon 1, Washington 0: Matt Mercer tossed seven shutout innings and the visiting Ducks (15-5, 43-1) beat the No. 22 Huskies (13-9, 3-2) for the second day in a row in a Pac-12 matchup in Seattle.

Mercer scattered six hits and a walk and struck out seven. Gabe Matthews doubled home the game’s lone run in the first.

Noah Bremer gave the Huskies six innings of scoreless, three-hit relief with seven strikeouts, but the bats never got going.

Gonzaga 4-8, San Francisco 3-1: The Bulldogs (13-10, 5-0) swept a West Coast Conference doubleheader with the visiting Dons (12-11, 1-4).

Justin Vernia pitched a complete game four-hitter, allowing an unearned run with seven strikeouts in the second game. Daniel Frederickson went 2 for 3 with a homer and Jake Roberts drove in two as the Zags piled up 12 hits.

In the first game, Justin Jacobs ripped a walk-off single through the right side of the infield with runners on the corners in the 16th inning. Starter Eli Morgan, last week’s national player of the week, struck out eight over seven innings and allowed three runs.

Whitworth 9-1, Puget Sound 7-4: The visiting Pirates (13-10, 5-9) split a Northwest Conference doubleheader with the Loggers (9-11, 5-9) in Tacoma.

The Pirates posted two runs in the 11th inning to take the early game. Garrett Hughes smacked a solo homer, and Matthew Nelson ripped an RBI double three batters later. Kelly Fitzpatrick (1-2) earned the win with three shutout relief innings.

In the second game, Puget Sound starter Merle Rowan (3-2) limited the Pirates to a run on four hits and two walks over 8 1/3 innings. The lone run came via Matthew Nelson’s solo home run.

CC Spokane 12-11, Skagit Valley 0-1: In convincing fashion, the Sasquatch swept a nonconference doubleheader from the visiting Cardinals.

Aaron Fritts went 3 for 4 and clubbed a three-run homer to pave the way in the early game. Kade Woods tossed five innings of one-hit ball with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the Squatch mounted a 19-hit attack, with Mitchell Cox going 4 for 5 and Dustin Yates picking up three hits.

Softball

Arizona 12, Washington 0: The No. 4 Wildcats (31-1, 5-0) put up eight runs in the first inning then cruised over the No. 5 Huskies (26-5, 3-2) in five innings in a Pac-12 matchup in Tucson, Arizona.

Casey Stangel and Ali Aguilar picked up Washington’s two base hits in the affair. Arizona’s Alyssa Palomino went 3 for 3 with her ninth homer and four RBIs.

Whitworth 0-3, Pacific 1-0: The Pirates (17-5, 8-2) split a Northwest Conference doubleheader with the Boxers (5-16, 3-8) in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Maddi Perez went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs and Ashley Trueblood pitched a five-hit shutout to salvage the split in the later game.

Pacific’s Katie Macaitis-Smith homered and Ashley Martin fired a two-hitter in the first game.

CC Spokane 2-10, Yakima Valley 0-7: The visiting Sasquatch (10-2, 5-1) squashed the Yaks (6-6, 3-5) in a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader in Yakima.

Hannah Anderson blanked the Yaks on five hits and no walks, striking out five in the early game.

In the second game, CCS pounded out 11 hits, with four players collecting two each.
