Spokane Indians dealt eighth straight road loss by Boise
BOISE – Danny Edgeworth went 3 for 4 with a home run and the Boise Hawks trounced the Spokane Indians 8-2 on Friday in the second of a five-game Northwest League series.
The Indians (4-12) lost their eighth straight road game to start the season. They went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12.
Spokane starter Alex Speas (0-3), the Texas Rangers second round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, allowed three runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts over five innings.
Boise picked up two in the first inning. With two down, Ryan Metzler drew a walk and Daniel Jipping homered for the second night in a row – a line drive to left-center for his fourth homer of the season.
The Indians got one back in the third on Curtis Terry’s one-out solo home run, his second of the campaign. Spokane had two on with two down in the fourth, but Melvin Novoa flied out to center to end the threat.
In the home half, Edgeworth’s second homer of the season made it 3-1.
The Indians put two on with one out in the fifth, but again stranded both. Andretty Cordero led off the sixth with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and stole third when Novoa drew a two-out walk. But Kobie Taylor bounced out to the pitcher to kill the rally.
Boise (9-7) added to its lead in the home half of the seventh – in a big way. Edgeworth and Aubrey McCarty started the inning with back-to-back singles against Argenis Rodriguez. With runners on the corners, Bret Boswell hit into a fielder’s choice at second and Edgeworth scored on the play.
Sam Tidaback drew a walk and Cole Anderson doubled to left to plate Boswell, with Tidaback ending up at third. Steven Bruce relieved Rodriguez and promptly surrendered a triple to Steven Linkous and both runners scored. Matt McLaughlin followed with a single to bring in Linkous to make it a five-run inning and an 8-1 lead.
The Indians scratched a run out in the eighth. Cordero led off with a walk, went to second on Kole Enright’s single and scored on a single by Novoa.
The teams continue the series on Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
