A dispute erupted in gunfire Monday afternoon at an apartment complex in west Spokane, leaving one man dead and a suspect in custody.

The shooting happened at the Canyon Greens Apartments, 1001 S. Westcliff Place, and was reported to police just before 2 p.m., Officer Josh Laiva said.

Laiva said family members had been notified of the man’s death, and witnesses were cooperating with police. He didn’t say if the man and the shooter were related.

Relatives could be seen walking to and from the apartment complex, where there was a heavy police presence. Reporters were not allowed near the scene of the investigation.

Laiva said the shooting happened inside an apartment, although some of the dispute may have taken place outside. Detectives were awaiting a warrant to search the unit.

The man’s identity will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police asked any witnesses who haven’t already been contacted by detectives to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.
