How tweet it is! Zags-Gaels rivalry gains momentum on Twitter after GU’s big win

By Michael Gulledge Correspondent

Gonzaga’s rematch with Saint Mary’s is already building momentum only a short time after the Zags’ dominant 79-56 win over the Gaels on Saturday night.

The official Twitter page for Saint Mary’s Athletics asked Gonzaga to bring its “a-game” for the Feb. 11 rematch in Moraga, California. They also attached a meme that finished with the phrase “it won’t always be like this.”

A few Gonzaga players, ESPN analysts, and Gonzaga’s President Thayne McCulloh also went to Twitter to share their thoughts on GU’s win.

Przemek Karnowski and Nigel Williams-Goss praised the Kennel Club, Gonzaga’s student section, for bringing energy to the rivalry game. Karnowski also used a hashtag to refer to Bulldogs fans as the best in the nation.

President McCulloh called the Zags’ win an “excellent performance” and said it was great to have the student section back on campus.

Gonzaga, now the last remaining unbeaten NCAA Division I team in the nation, has been mentioned by analysts as a candidate for the Final Four.

Dick Vitale, a longtime ESPN college basketball broadcaster, stated on Twitter the Zags have “legit final 4 potential”.

This week, Gonzaga will travel to Santa Clara (10-9, 4-2 WCC) on Thursday and will return home for a matchup against the Portland Pilots (9-8, 2-3) on Saturday. On Monday, Jan. 23, Gonzaga will play at Portland to make up a game that was postponed earlier this season.
