Sun Belt Roundup: Vandals upend UNLV in overtime for 2nd win of season

Callen Hightower hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass in overtime to lift Idaho past UNLV 33-30 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

UNLV (1-3) opened the OT period with a 23-yard field goal from Evan Panels after stalling at the 5. Then it was Idaho’s turn, as Aaron Duckworth and Linehan pushed to the 11 on the ground, setting up the winning throw to Hightower.

Linehan finished 17 of 35 for 249 yards and 19 more on the ground, including a 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Duckworth had 90 yards on 20 carries, including a TD, and Kaden Ellis returned an interception 31 yards for the game’s first score as Idaho (2-2) picked up its first road win of the season.

Austin Rehkow had two field goals for the Vandals. Trailing 27-20 in the fourth quarter, UNLV forced overtime with a 55-yard touchdown run by Lexington Thomas, who finished with 160 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.

Tulane 41, Louisana-Lafayette 39 (4OT): Glen Cuiellette threw four touchdown passes, including a 7-yarder to Terren Encalade that lifted the Green Wave to a win over the Ragin Cajuns in the fourth overtime in New Orleans.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (2-2) had a chance to tie, but failed on a 2-point conversion after Anthony Jennings hit Elijah McGuire on a 22-yard scoring strike.

Central Arkansas 28, Arkansas State 23: Hayden Hildebrand threw for 270 yards and a touchdown and the Bears beat the Red Wolves in Jonesboro, Arkansas, for their first ever win against an FBS school.

Jatavious Wilson was Hildebrand’s primary target, catching seven passes for 130 yards. Antwon Wells ran for 47 yards and a touchdown for Central Arkansas (3-1).

Appalachian State 45, Akron 38: Jalin Moore ran for a career-high 257 yards and two touchdowns and the Mountaineers hung on to beat the Zips in a shootout in Akron, Ohio.

The teams combined for 1,073 yards of total offense and 60 first downs.

Western Michigan 49, Georgia Southern 31: Zach Terrell threw four touchdown passes and the Broncos won their fourth straight to open the season by beating the Eagles in a non-conference showdown in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Troy 52, New Mexico State 6: Brandon Silvers threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to help the Trojans rout the Aggies in the conference opener for both teams in Troy, Alabama.

South Alabama 41, Nicholls 40 (OT): The Jaguars’ defense stopped Dontrell Taylor short of the end zone on a 2-point conversion attempt to seal an overtime win against the Colonels in Mobile, Alabama.
