Women’s basketball: Gonzaga topples Winthrop to wrap up Paradise Jam
Jill Barta had 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and No. 25 Gonzaga cruised to a 71-41 win over Winthrop on Saturday to end a two-game losing streak at the Paradise Jam tournament in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Jessie Loera came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and score a career-high 11 points. Kiara Kudron also had 11 points for the Bulldogs (4-2) on 5-of-7 shooting. Grace Collett was the only one of 10 Gonzaga players who did not score, but she had seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Ellie Tinkle had all 10 of her points in the first half as Gonzaga raced to a 37-17 lead, scoring the last eight points for a 17-2 run.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with losses to Michigan and No. 10 Florida State.
Erica Williams had 17 points for the Eagles (1-6), who shot 31 percent (16 of 52) and were outrebounded 48-27.
No. 6 Maryland 79, Washington State 69: Brionna Jones had 20 points and a career-high 20 rebounds and the No. 6 Terps struggled before pulling away late in the fourth quarter to beat the Cougars in the South Point Shootout in Las Vegas.
Maryland (6-0) entered having won each game by at least 32 points. The Terrapins’ largest deficit was 2-0 and it had trailed for less than 2 minutes total in five games.
This was different. The Cougars led by six in the first half and for much of the third quarter. Tied at 61, Jones hit two free throws and Destiny Slocum added a 3-pointer and two free throws in a 10-2 run to put Maryland ahead 71-63 with 1:39 left.
Kaila Charles scored 19 points, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had 15 and Slocum 11 for Maryland in its final tuneup before its showdown at No. 4 Louisville on Thursday.
Borislava Hristova scored 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting for Washington State (4-2). The Cougars were 7 of 21 from the foul line.
No. 15 Washington 94, Seattle 64: Kelsey Plum scored 44 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds as the No. 15 Huskies rolled to a victory over the Redhawks in Seattle.
Plum was 15 of 23 from the field, made four 3-pointers and was 10 of 10 from the line. She’s 16 3-point baskets shy of breaking the program record, and is 137 points away from becoming the Pac-12 career scoring leader.
Chantel Osahor, who had Washington’s first triple-double on Tuesday against Idaho, finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Katie Collier added 10 points for the Huskies.
Kaylee Best scored 21 points to lead Seattle (1-5).
Washington (5-1) led 45-40 at halftime and had a double-digit lead two minutes into the third quarter.
Grand Canyon 64, Idaho 60: Casey Rarrick scored 20 points, Aniya Baker added 15 points with 12 rebounds and the Antelopes outlasted the Vandals in the closing game of the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Classic in Phoenix.
Mikayla Ferenz powered the Vandals (2-3) offense, with 20 points in her 38 minutes. Brooke Reilly recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
Late offensive rebounds by the opposition cost the Vandals for the second consecutive day as five fourth-quarter offensive boards by the Antelopes helped GCU erase a 58-55 Idaho lead. GCU outscored the Vandals 15-9 in the fourth quarter.
