Lentil cook-off seeks recipes

The National Lentil Festival is looking for its 22nd annual Legendary Lentil Cook-off, presented by the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council.

The top five finalists will be invited to prepare their recipes at the festival. The first place winner will be crowned with a chef’s hat and awarded $2,000. Second place is $1,000, and third place is $500. There is an additional $100 prize for the “People’s Choice Award.”

Last year, the cook-off received 109 recipes from 24 states, Canada and the United Kingdom. Recipes are rated on ease of preparation, flavor, texture, creativity, appearance and use of lentils. Recipes are required to include ½ cup dry lentils or 1 cup cooked lentils and are limited to a maximum of 15 ingredients.

Recipes must be submitted online at www.lentilfest.com by June 13.

The National Lentil Festival takes place Aug. 19 and 20 in Pullman and is organized by the Pullman Chamber of Commerce, city of Pullman and Washington State University.

Coming soon

to Riverfront Park

There’s a new reason to visit Riverfront Park in the morning: breakfast.

The Fountain Café is opening for the morning meal for the first time beginning May 31, according to Sam Song, assistant director of the Spokane city park.

Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Song recommends the breakfast burrito. Other hot breakfast items and espresso will be served, he said.

But there’s no breakfast on weekends, when the café is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Those are the same summer weekday hours for lunch and dinner.

The seasonal outdoor café is located next to Rotary Fountain in Riverfront Park at North Howard Street and West Spokane Falls Boulevard. Guests order at a walk-up window and can sit at bistro tables with umbrellas on the adjacent patio. There are also benches along the rock-walled patio and nearby picnic tables along the river.

Call the café at (509) 625-6656.
