Season over for Indians starter Michael Matuella

By Josh Horton joshho@spokesman.com

Spokane Indians starting pitcher Michael Matuella was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow ligament sprain and is shut down for the season, the team confirmed Wednesday.

Matuella made one start for the Indians this season, throwing three scoreless innings and surrendering one hit.

The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2015 for a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) while at Duke. Matuella is not expected to have surgery for his most recent injury.

Kaleb Fontenot is expected to replace Matuella in the starting rotation. Fontenot has pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the Indians this season.

Shortslef added

The Indians added right-handed pitcher Jacob Shortslef to their roster on Wednesday. Shortslef was 0-1 with a 11.57 ERA in Frisco this season before being reassigned to Spokane. Shortslef made two appearances for the Indians last season, posting a 9.00 ERA.

Shortslef is scheduled to start Thursday in the Indians’ series opener against Eugene.
