Area roundup: Cougars top ASU in Pac-12 women’s soccer opener

Kourtney Guetlein scored both of Washington State’s goals and the Cougars beat Arizona State 2-1 in a Pac-12 women’s soccer opener on Sunday in Tempe, Arizona.

The Sun Devils (4-4, 0-1) outshot WSU (8-1, 1-0) 24-6 but Cougars goalkeeper Ella Dedrick made nine saves.

• Chloe Williams scored in the 87th minute to lift Eastern Washington (8-1-1, 2-0 Big Sky) to a 3-2 victory over Idaho State (1-9-1, 0-2) in Pocatello. Allison Raniere and Jenny Chavez added goals.

• Kayla Watanabe scored in the 59th minute in a 1-0 win for Idaho (6-4-1, 2-0 Big Sky) over Weber State (4-6-1, 0-2) in Ogden, Utah. The Vandals were outshot 22-9 but Idaho goalkeeper Amanda Poertner made six saves for the shutout.

• Willamette (3-4-1, 3-1 Northwest) scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute for a 1-0 win over Whitworth (5-4, 3-2) in Salem. The penalty kick resulted when a shot went off the arm of Megan McCart, who was issued a red card.

Men’s soccer

UNLV scored in 49th minute and the Rebels (6-2-0) beat Gonzaga (4-4-1) 1-0 in nonconference play in Las Vegas.

• Sam Engle scored in the third minute and Timmy Costa made four saves as No. 8-ranked Whitworth (8-0, 4-0 Northwest) beat Pacific Lutheran (6-3, 3-1), ending the Lutes four-match winning streak.

Men’s golf

Jake Scarrow finished three rounds at 6 under at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa, to tie for seventh place and lead the Idaho Vandals to a third-place finish at 18 under in the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Iowa (22 under) was first and North Carolina State (19 under) second in the 15-team tournament.

• Whitworth finished at 51 over to tie for seventh place in the 10-team Pacific Lutheran Invitational played at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington. PLU and Willamette tied for first at 21 over. Whitworth’s top finisher was Oliver Rudnicki who finished tied for 22nd at 11 over for the two rounds.

Women’s golf

Whitworth placed second at the Whitman Invitational played on at Wine Valley GC and Veteran Memorial in Walla Walla. The Pirates finished the five-team event at 74 over, 24 strokes behind Whitman. Chelsea Bayley was Whitworth’s top finisher, placing third at 12 over in the two-round event, eight strokes behind the medalist.

Hockey

Nickey Leeder scored two power-play goals, one to tie in the third period and the second at 3:10 of overtime to give the Grand Forks Border Bruins (2-4-0-1, 5) a 3-2 KIJHL win over the Spokane Braves (1-4-0-3, 5) at Eagles Ice-A-Rena. Spokane led after second-period goals by Josh Fisher and Paxton Malone.
