WSU, EWU score big soccer victories
Kourtney Guetlein headed home a goal in the second overtime to lift Washington State to a 2-1 women’s soccer win over Cal State Fullerton in Pullman and keep the Cougars unbeaten at 6-0-0.
The Titans (6-1-1) scored on a first-half penalty kick. WSU tied the match on Kaitlyn Johnson’s goal in the 81st minute.
WSU goaltender Ella Dederick made eight saves.
• Chloe Williams scored two first-half goals and Eastern Washington defeated the Green Bay Phoenix 4-2 in Wisconsin.
EWU continued its best start in program history, improving to 5-1-1. The Phoenix fell to 2-5-0.
Devan Talley’s goal in the 58th minute proved to be the game-winner while Lexi Klinkenberg added an insurance goal, her first of the season, in the 78th for the Eagles. Williams has six goals this season.
• Oklahoma State scored in each half to defeat Gonzaga 2-0 in Spokane. The Cowgirls (3-4-0) had seven shots on goal to three for the host Bulldogs (1-3-3).
• Elizabeth Woerner’s goal in the second overtime gave Memphis (4-1-1) a 4-3 victory over Idaho (3-4-0) in Tennessee. Kavita Battan scored twice, becoming the first Vandal to score multiple goals in one game since 2012. Kayla Watanabe had Idaho’s other goal.
Men’s soccer
Gonzaga (3-2-1) made Ben White’s goal in the 55th minute stand up for a 2-0 victory over Milwaukee (1-4-1) in Spokane. The host Bulldogs finished with two shots on goal and held the Panthers to one.
• Jonah Snyder scored twice, Tyler Pangia had two assists and Whitworth (4-0-0) took a 3-1 win over UC Santa Cruz (1-2-2) at Willamette University in Salem. Snyder gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead. After the Banana Slugs scored in the 62nd minute, Alfredo Omelas scored the final goal in the 78th.
Volleyball
Gonzaga (7-3) split the first two sets with 10th-ranked Arizona State (8-0) before falling 23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 in Tempe, Arizona. Sarah Blinn had 19 kills for the second consecutive match for the visiting Bulldogs. Jordan Gasser added 11 kills and 10 digs.
• In a Saturday night match in Honolulu, Eastern Washington (4-6) lost to 16th-ranked Hawaii (8-1). Set scores were 19-25, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25.
Nicole Rigoni had 21 assists and 10 digs for the visiting Eagles while Ana Jakovijevic had 10 kills on .280 hitting.
Women’s golf
Whitworth finished two strokes back of Whitman for second place at the season-opening Pacific Lutheran Invitational played at Lake Spanaway GC in Spanaway, Washington. Chelsea Bayley and Katie Ochoa were Whitworth’s top individuals, finishing the two rounds in 11-over 155 to tie for fourth place, two stroke back of the medalist.
