Area roundup: Ben White’s goal helps Gonzaga draw with Cal Poly
Ben White’s goal in the 75th minute helped the Gonzaga men’s soccer team preserve a 1-all draw with Cal Poly in a nonconference match Thursday at Luger Field in Spokane.
The Bulldogs had to play from behind throughout after giving up a third-minute goal to Cal Poly’s Ruben Duran.
White’s goal was set up by David Sigurdsson and Jakob Granlund. Sigurdsson played a strong header into the crossbar and White redirected Granlund’s rebound into the net for his first career goal.
Gonzaga (1-1-1) overcame a slow start by unleashing 15 shots in the second half and two overtime periods. The Bulldogs held an 18-6 shot advantage.
Gonzaga will host Northwestern Saturday at 4 p.m. The Wildcats also played at Luger Field on Thursday, dropping a 3-0 decision to Seattle.
Cal Poly fell to 1-0-1 on the season.
