In Brief: Sight-in days at Spokane Rifle Club
HUNTING – Hunters can zero-in their rifles before the general hunting seasons at the annual Sight-In Days at the Spokane Rifle Club.
Club facilities along the Spokane River downstream from the Bowl and Pitcher will be open to nonmembers starting Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and continuing on Oct. 8-10 and Oct. 15-16.
Cost is $20 for one rifle plus $5 for one additional rifle. Youths under 18 with a paying adult can shoot for $5.
The club offers a scope and firearm checkup before guests hit the range. It also offers assistance in adjusting scopes and sights from helpers on the range with targets provided for 50- and 100-yard range shooting.
Club rules require that all firearms should be unloaded when arriving at the range.

Upriver Scrub set for Saturday
RIVERS – Another annual community cleanup is scheduled for the Spokane River this weekend, this time farther upstream.
Some 600 volunteers removed more than 4 tons of junk from the gorge and university areas below and above downtown during the Sept. 19 Spokane River Cleanup.
The Upriver Scrub is set for Oct. 3 to collect and dispose of debris along the river upstream from Pines Road with 9:30 a.m. meetup locations at Centennial Trail access points at Harvard Road, Barker Road and the Mirabeau Park access.
The event has been quietly organized for years by the Northwest Whitewater Association, whose members provide rafts for hauling junk. More volunteers are needed for shoreline pickup.

Women featured in special promotion
HUNTING/FISHING – Free hunting, fishing and shooting events and seminars for women – and taught by women – are being lined up for the Ladies Day Out promotion at the Post Falls Cabela’s on Oct. 10.
”These events are geared for ladies of all skill levels,” said Kristi Blaver, Cabela’s spokeswoman.
Among the offerings are:
• Bows are for Ladies – Archery 101.
• Handgun Safety and Selection.
• Preparing Your Summer Catch.
• “Refuse to be a Victim” Course.
• Mother/Daughter Archery Contest.
• Longevity for the Outdoors Woman.
Guests include Idaho State Bowhunters Region 1 Director Sara Lamson, fishing pro Benita Galland and members of The Well Armed Woman of Spokane.

Landers outlines ‘beauty of walking’
HIKING – Newspaper outdoors editor and hiking guidebook author Rich Landers will give a free program on “The Beauty of Walking” today at 2 p.m. at Touchmark on South Hill, 2929 S. Waterford Dr.
The program is billed as the keynote of Touchmark’s Active Aging celebration.
