International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day Event: Reaching Out Can Change Your Life - International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is the one day a year when people who are affected by suicide loss gather around the world at events in their local communities for support, information and empowerment. This year’s program includes a screening of “Family Journeys: Healing and Hope after a Suicide,” a new documentary produced by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that traces the ripple effect of a suicide through families and communities, and explores the challenges to cope and heal. Free Assistance from a Statewide Health Insurance Benefit Advisor - A representative from Statewide Health Insurance Benefit Advisor visits a number of Whitman County Library branch locations each month assisting residents with their Medicare and insurance questions. SHIBA volunteers provide information and counseling to individuals about health insurance and health care access, focusing on Medicare issues along with other health insurance related issues. Health for All - This community-based healthcare access project links uninsured individuals and families in Eastern Washington with state health insurance programs and assists those who do not qualify for state-sponsored coverage by linking them with appropriate community resources. Hearing Loss Association – Spokane Chapter - Group provides support, education, advocacy, and camaraderie to people with a hearing loss. Striders - A community walking and exercise program promoting fitness, fun, friends and health education since 1995. Meets Mondays and Wednesdays, September through May, from 7:45-8:30 a.m. at the Spokane Valley YMCA, 2421 N. Discovery Place. Led by certified instructors, the classes emphasize strength, stretching, and balance. Miles walked individually are records and awards are presented at five awards meetings each year which feature health-related speakers. Cost is $15 per year or $2 for each exercise class. Therapeutic Recreation for Disabled Adults - Recreational, educational and social activities for people with disabilities.
