Women’s basketball: EWU and Idaho win while Whitworth loses in overtime

Hayley Hodgins scored 20 points and Eastern Washington women’s basketball coach Wendy Schuller picked up her 200th career win with the Eagles’ 65-44 victory over Air Force in Cheney on Sunday.

The Eagles (2-0) outscored the Falcons 25-13 in the first quarter and didn’t look back. EWU’s defense made 12 steals and blocked eight shots as Air Force (0-2) turned the ball over 25 times.

Delaney Hodgins added 14 points.

Vandals win opener: Ali Forde scored 10 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked four shots as Idaho took a 64-42 win over UC Santa Barbara (0-2) in the Vandals’ season opener at Moscow.

Geraldine McCorkell scored 14 points and Christina Salvatore 10 for Idaho, which took off to a 19-5 first-quarter lead after the Gauchos went 2 for 14 in the first 10 minutes while turning the ball over five times.

Whitworth falls in overtime: Eastern Oregon caught Whitworth in regulation and the Mountaineers (1-2) went on to a 71-61 victory in the Pirates’ season opener in Spokane.

KC McConnell had 14 points, Alexis McLeod 11 and Faith Emerson 10 for Whitworth.

Eastern Oregon outscored Whitworth 10-2 in the final five minutes of regulation to force overtime.
