Spokane Chiefs pick up third straight win on road trip
EDMONTON, Alberta – Kailer Yamamoto scored twice in the third period when Spokane got all of its goals and the Chiefs picked up their third straight victory, beating the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-1 in a Western Hockey League game on Sunday.
Tyson Verhelst made 35 saves for his third win in four nights on the Chiefs’ road swing through the Central Division.
Edmonton (4-9, 3-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a Dario Meyer’s goal.
Yamamoto tied the game with his fourth goal of the season just 1:33 into the final period off a steal. He added the Chiefs’ second goal at 14:09 on a power-play goal from Nik Andersen and Jason Fram. Riley Whittingham added an empty-net goal off an assist from Dalton Hamaliuk, who collected his first WHL point.
The Chiefs (7-7-1-1) are in second place in the U.S. Division with 16 points. Spokane will play its fifth-game of its six-game road trip in Kamloops on Tuesday night.
