Six vacuum sales representatives told police Saturday that a man threatened them with a gun as they sat in a van waiting for a co-worker.

The Kirby Vacuums employees were parked near the intersection of Upriver Drive and Ella Road while another employee was inside a nearby home finishing a carpet cleaning. Moments after the man approached with a gun and told them to leave, a Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy arrived to check out a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area, according to court documents.

One of the employees yelled at the deputy for help and the man, Tyler J. Rhoades, complied with the deputy’s order to put the gun down.

Rhoades, 34, told the deputy that the employees had walked by his residence and he thought they had stolen from him, according to court documents. The deputy reported that Rhoades appeared to be intoxicated and arrested him.
