Support abuse victims

Regularly we read stories of children sexually abused at the hands of trusted community leaders; the most recent example are the accusations against Dr. Craig Morgenstern.

Spokane has a long and sordid history of child abuse at the hands of teachers, law enforcement officers, clergy and Scout leaders. Our community is not unlike others across the nation. Fortunately, organizations like the Catholic Church have taken steps to address the plague of sexual abuse.

Unfortunately, some of our community leaders are still in denial, unwilling to acknowledge such abuse has taken place, at times resorting to public embarrassment of victims.

How can we combat this plague? Victims should be encouraged to share their experiences, and the community needs to listen, respond positively and continue to be ever vigilant. The result of an appropriate, supportive response will benefit all in our community and make it a safer place. Any reaction short of this is inexcusable.

The abused need to be brave, speak up and share their stories. Abuse in any form is unacceptable, yesterday, today or in the future. Sexual abuse is something victims carry for a lifetime. Healing can only begin when they believe it’s safe to speak.
