Road flares, guns among Murry’s possessions, unsealed records say
Numerous road flares and a gas can spout were found in a storage locker maintained by murder suspect Roy Murry in Pullman, according to court records unsealed Tuesday.
The remains of road flares and several gasoline cans were recovered from the scene of a fire at 20 E. Chattaroy Road on May 26. Murry is accused of killing Terry Canfield; his wife, Lisa M. Canfield; and Lisa Canfield’s son, John Robert Constable and then setting the home and a shed on fire. Lisa Canfield was the mother of Murry’s wife.
Investigators found multiple Remington .22-caliber cartridge cases at the scene. A search of Murry’s car after he was arrested turned up a .22-caliber pistol as well as a broken .223-caliber rifle. There were multiple boxes of ammunition for both calibers and 20 magazines loaded with .223-caliber ammunition, according to court documents.
State records show that Murry owns 15 handguns, but only two were seized by police after searches of his car, his apartment and the home of his parents. Police found only a .22-caliber bolt-action rifle and a .223-caliber rifle in his apartment in Lewiston. A .22-caliber rifle was seized from his parents’ home in Walla Walla along with a .380-caliber handgun and multiple boxes and magazines of ammunition.
Investigators found 20 gas cans at the residence on Chattaroy Road, plus the tops of two gas cans and melted red plastic that could be another gas can.
In an interview with police, Murry denied killing his three family members but described how it could be done by accessing the property unseen from a neighbor’s property. “He said that the killers would have brought gasoline with them and not depended on gas being present at the home,” court documents say.
A chain and lock blocking the neighboring home’s driveway had been cut and replaced with a freshly cut strand of barbed wire. Several pairs of wire cutters were found in Murry’s car, according to court records. Police also found blood in Murry’s car and apartment.
Murry is in the Spokane County Jail in lieu of $3 million bond on three charges of first-degree murder.
