In brief: Skydiver rescued near Priest Lake
The Priest Lake Search and Rescue team found and rescued an injured skydiver Friday afternoon.
The man broke his leg near Soldier Creek east of Coolin, Idaho. He had landed on a pile of logs from a logging operation, said search and rescue President Mike Nielsen.
“His chute got tangled in the trees and dumped him right on them,” he said.
The man was skydiving with three people and a search was launched when the man didn’t land with the others. The pilot of the group’s plane took off with additional spotters to find the man, a task complicated by his green parachute and green shirt. He was eventually spotted from the air and rescuers were directed to his remote location.
An ambulance was able to use a logging road to get close to the man, Nielsen said. The Coolin Cavanaugh Bay Fire District and three Bonner County Sheriff’s deputies also assisted.
He was taken to a local hospital by helicopter.
Fish Lake fire totally contained
The Fish Lake fire was declared 100 percent contained Friday, two days after it created a towering plume of smoke visible from much of Spokane.
The fire, which was in Spokane County Fire District 3, quickly grew to 145 acres in the area northeast of Fish Lake near Queen Lucas Lake on Wednesday afternoon, but was halted by that night after an concerted effort by firefighters, who were assisted by a tanker aircraft and three helicopters making water drops.
One firefighter sustained a minor injury Friday morning, according to Spokane Fire Assistant Chief Brian Schaeffer. He was treated and back at work by the end of the day.
The fire is believed to have started near railroad tracks. The cause is still under investigation.
