Obituary: Hayward, Mary Frances (Kelly) “Marifran”
Age 74
Mary was born to Clarence A. Kelly and Alta J. Bowers Kelly on July 7, 1940 in Moscow, Idaho.
As a young child Mary’s family moved to Spokane, Washington.
Mary’s caring heart and compassion for the sick and injured led her to be a volunteer at the Shriners Hospital in Spokane and Later to her career in nursing.
In 1962 she graduated with her nursing degree from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane.
Shortly thereafter Mary and her parents moved to Seattle, WA where she met and married her husband Lt. Cmdr.
Stearns Lyman “Terry” Hayward on June 26, 1965.
She was widowed on December 14, 1966 when he was killed in a helicopter crash while on approach to USS Tripoli (LPH-10).
Following Terry’s death she returned to Seattle and worked for many years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Seattle.
While working, Mary was driven to teach other nurses and advance the nursing profession, and thus attended the University of Washington and earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education.
At the VAMC she worked in the Coronary Care Unit and then in the Department of Nursing Education until her retirement in 1997.
During retirement she traveled and cultivated her love of gardening, and always had the most beautiful garden in the neighborhood.
Mary is survived by her daughter Cynthia Muncey (Lance) of Colbert, WA and grandsons Garrett Muncey and Jack Muncey, of whom she was very proud.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 15 at 10am at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery in Shoreline, Washington.
