Fire evacuations pending for Holden Village, Lucerne

Wolverine Fire flares up in North Cascades

From staff reports
Evacuation notices are pending for the Lake Chelan communities of Holden Village and Lucerne following flare ups on the Wolverine Fire. A level 3 evacuation will go into effect Saturday afternoon for both areas. The Wolverine Fire is burning about 3 miles northwest of Lucerne. It started on June 29 from a lightning strike and has grown to about 1,526 acres. While there is no immediate threat to Holden Village, officials are concerned that the single road leading into the village could be cutoff if the fire continues to move northward. Holden Village, a Lutheran retreat center, has about 350 residents, including workers cleaning up an old copper mine site. The Pacific Crest Trail detour will remain open at this time. However, Forest Service officials said there will be no bus transportation to Lucerne Landing and Holden Village is closed to public entry. Smoke is visible throughout the Lake Chelan area, including Stehekin, but businesses remain open. For further information on the Wolverine Fire please visit: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4354/
