Fans get geared up

Readers share best Seahawks memories, memorabilia

1. Dan Walsh, Nine Mile Falls

Walsh still has a pair of ticket stubs from a Seattle Seahawks-Kansas City Chiefs game on Sept. 20, 1987, in the Kingdome. He noted that at the time, $20 for a football ticket seemed like a lot of money. “I’m thinking they are a bit more expensive now. Jeff Kemp was quarterback with Curt Warner, Steve Largent and Brian Bosworth. Seattle won the game 43-14 and ended the season 9-6.”

2. Nadine Hawley, Spokane

Hawley submitted a photo of her son, Michael, with her favorite Seahawk, Steve Largent, from the training camp in Cheney circa 1982. This is one of her favorite photos, and she’s using it as her Facebook profile picture this week. Michael Hawley is 37 and still a huge Seahawks fan, his mom said. The family also has other pieces of Largent memorabilia, including Wheaties boxes and playing cards.

3. Martha Arneson, Spokane

On Christmas morning in 1992, Pete Arneson found some new Seahawks gear – a John L. Williams jersey – under the tree. He’s shown modeling it here with his dad, Dale. Pete is now 25; the jersey is probably safely stored away in a box in the basement, his mom said.

4. Jess Ponikvar, Spokane

When Jess Ponikvar says he’s a lifelong Seahawks fan, he means it. As he wrote: “When I was born on a cold Montana morning I was swaddled in the blanket of our new team. A few years later we moved to Spokane and my mom bought me this helmet. In 1982 I handed it over the fence in Cheney with my tiny hands and had it signed by Jim Zorn, Dave Krieg, Steve Largent, Norm Johnson, Efferin Herrera and Chuck Knox.”

5. William Benjamin, Post Falls

In 1990, William Benjamin and his mother argued over his class picture. Specifically, whether he could wear his black Seahawks Starter Jacket for picture day at his Portland high school. The 15-year-old won. “I had to wear my Seattle Starter Jacket,” he wrote. “I wore it everywhere.”

6. Ken Hoekema, Spokane

Ken Hoekema calls himself a Seahawks fan from way back. “I only saw one game in the Kingdome, but Zorn, Largent, Raible and company were my football heroes in junior high.” His vintage jersey, purchased at the old dome during Largent’s final season, commemorates the Hall of Famer’s career in blue and green. “Instead of framing it, I decided to wear it for playoff games,” he said.

7. Stacy Sanchez, Spokane

Stacy Sanchez and Trevor Erickson, of Spokane, are big Seahawks fans. As she wrote, “My husband has literally been a Hawks fan from birth. His dad put him in Hawks gear as a baby.” He loves his vintage Steve Largent shirt, but among the most prized pieces from his collection of Seahawks memorabilia is a 1985 belt buckle passed down to him from his grandfather.
