CdA school board seeking levy boost

The Coeur d’Alene School District will ask voters in March for a $15 million-a-year tax levy, about $2 million more than the current levy that expires in June.

The additional money will be earmarked for buying new curricular materials and hiring more teachers to reduce class sizes.

The School Board voted 4-1 Monday night to set the levy request at $15 million in a March 10 special election. Trustee Terri Seymour voted no, saying she was in favor of keeping the levy at $12.86 million a year.

Trustee Tom Hearn said he thought the request should be higher than $15 million.

Voters last agreed to increase the levy in 2011, upping it by $5 million a year.

The two-year levy currently funds 21 percent of the district’s budget.
