GSL girls: University turns up defense to beat Mead
The University girls basketball team used its usual staple, defense, to upend Mead.
The visiting Titans forced 19 turnovers and outscored the Panthers 17-9 in the pivotal third quarter as University pulled away 58-44 in Greater Spokane League action Friday.
Kaitlin Pannell led U-Hi (5-4 overall, 4-3 league) with 14 points and Josie Wicklund added 10. Emma Kennedy dished out six assists.
Sue Winger led Mead (6-3, 5-2) with 18 points and four blocked shots.
Gonzaga Prep 60, Mt. Spokane 17: The visiting No. 1-ranked Bullpups (9-0, 7-0) overwhelmed the Wildcats (5-4, 3-4) with smothering defense. G-Prep opened a 39-13 lead by halftime. Otiona Gildon led with 26 points and Laura Stockton chipped in 13. Ari Newcomb had nine for the Wildcats. G-Prep has won 32 consecutive games.
Central Valley 68, Ferris 30: The visiting Bears (8-1, 6-1) forced 19 turnovers to cruise past the Saxons (3-5, 3-4). Madison Hovren scored a team-high 15 points to go with nine rebounds and Courtney Carolan added 13 points.
Lewis and Clark 71, North Central 37: The Tigers (6-3, 5-2) zipped to a 32-18 lead by halftime then outscored the visiting Indians (0-9, 0-7) 22-8 in the fourth quarter at Hunter Fieldhouse. Michaela Kay scored a game-high 17 points for the Tigers, hitting five 3-pointers, and Lyndzi Rich had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Riley Lupfer had eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Megan Dean led NC with 14 points.
Shadle Park defeated Rogers: Lorretta Guertin hit a 3-pointer to pull the visiting Pirates (0-8, 0-7) within 56-53 with 1:30 remaining, but the Highlanders (2-7, 2-6) held on for the victory.
