In brief: Worker killed by chlorine leak identified

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Pacific Steel and Recycling worker who died after being exposed to chlorine gas on Wednesday was identified Monday as Edward K. Dumaw, 44.

He was one of eight workers hospitalized in critical condition following the accident at Pacific Steel. Several workers remained in the hospital in the days following the leak, but all others have now been released.

Workers at Pacific Steel punctured a 1-ton cylinder while crushing it for scrap metal, releasing the gas. The investigation into the incident and where the cylinder came from is being handled by the Washington Department of Labor and Industries.

At the end of the investigation, L&I will issue a report saying whether Pacific Steel broke any labor laws and may assess fines if violations are found.

Motorcyclist hospitalized after I-90 crash

Medics took a motorcyclist to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center following a rush-hour crash on Interstate 90.

Samuel Williams, a 58-year-old rider from Stevensville, Montana, crashed his 2013 Harley-Davidson FLTRX into two cars during a traffic slowdown Monday in the eastbound lanes near the Freya exit, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The two cars were slightly damaged and driven from the crash scene. The drivers were not injured.

The motorcycle was towed.

Officers help deliver baby after traffic stop

SEATTLE – Seattle police officers wound up helping with the birth of a baby after a routine traffic stop – and it was all recorded on a patrol car’s dashboard camera.

The department said Officer Anthony Reynolds pulled over the car after he saw it speeding and running red lights in South Seattle at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday. The driver opened his door and shouted that his wife was in labor.

Reynolds radioed for an ambulance, but it didn’t get there in time, and three other officers arrived just as the baby was born. The girl gave a cry but then began struggling to breathe, and Reynolds helped the mother clear the baby’s airway and got her breathing again.

The police department reports that the family is doing well, and they sent along a note thanking the officers.

Charges filed against suspect in rampage

TACOMA – Pierce County prosecutors have filed charges of first-degree murder and 16 other counts against a man suspected of killing a 71-year-old and terrorizing dozens of people in Puyallup last week.

The News Tribune reports that 34-year-old Nathen Terault entered not-guilty pleas Monday in Superior Court. He was ordered held on $5 million bail.

Police say Terault shot and killed Richard Johnson after rummaging through Johnson’s truck last Tuesday.

According to charging documents, Terault then rampaged across town, firing at women, children and police. No one else was hit. He faces a dozen counts of first-degree assault.

He’s also accused of stealing a woman’s SUV at gunpoint before crashing it through her garage door and leading officers on a chase. Terault was arrested after he was shot by a Puyallup police detective and pinned under a police vehicle by another officer. He appeared in court in a wheelchair.
