Man shot Saturday by Spokane police ID’d

Suspect came out firing, officers say

The man shot and killed by police in north Spokane on Saturday had a long criminal record.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday identified him as Kevin Lee McDaniel, 46.

On Saturday police said they spotted McDaniel, whom they suspected of being involved in a recent car theft, and followed him to 616 E. Sanson Ave. McDaniel reportedly refused to come out, and after about 30 minutes he ran out the front door, firing at police, according to police and witnesses. McDaniel was hit multiple times and died at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Court records indicate that McDaniel had several federal warrants issued for his arrest in the past two years for violating his probation by testing positive for marijuana use, moving without notifying his probation officer and committing new crimes.

McDaniel has been on federal probation since 2011 after serving time in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Court documents describe him as an armed career criminal.

Police have not released the names of the officers who fired.

In 1997 he was sentenced in Spokane County to 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to 21 charges, including forgery, possession of stolen property, trafficking in stolen property, assault and vehicular assault.

Court documents show that in Saturday’s shooting police attempted to retrieve surveillance video from a home across the street on Sanson when the guest staying at the home became belligerent and refused to allow police access. Officers called for a battering ram and nonlethal ammunition before the conflict with the guest was defused.

The home had cameras in its front yard and backyard, according to court documents. Police believe the camera in the front yard may have captured the shooting. Neighbors told police that they believed the residence was a drug house, court documents say.
