Area roundup: Joe Pistorese leads Cougars to win over No. 12 Cal
The Washington State baseball team buried its recent nine-game losing streak even deeper Friday night with its second straight win over No. 12 California, 4-0, in a Pac-12 game in Berkeley, California.
The Cougars again used stellar pitching, this time by Joe Pistorese. The senior left-hander pitched all nine innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out six. He needed 132 pitches to improve to 4-3.
Washington State (14-15, 3-8) got all its runs in the first inning. Shane Matheny had a two-run double and Derek Chapman and Tyler McDowell added RBI singles.
The Cougars will look for the series sweep over the Golden Bears (20-9, 7-4) today at 1 p.m.
• Brandon Bailey allowed one run through 8 2/3 innings and Gonzaga (14-15, 4-7) edged San Diego (17-11, 9-2) 2-1 in a West Coast Conference game in Spokane.
Bailey gave up an RBI double to San Diego’s Kyle Holder with two outs in the ninth before giving way to David Bigelow, who got the final out to secure his sixth save of the season.
The Toreros and Bulldogs will wrap up the three-game set today at noon.
• Whitworth’s 10-game winning streak was snapped with a pair of shutout losses to Linfield in a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Merkel Field in Spokane.
Wildcats starters Chris Haddeland and Aaron Thomassen were outstanding. Haddeland struck out seven in a four-hit shutout. Linfield (20-9, 10-7) beat Whitworth (20-10, 11-6) 4-0.
In the nightcap, Thomassen fired a five-hitter in Linfield’s 9-0 win. He struck out nine and walked one.
The teams complete the three-game set today at noon.
• Branden Berry drove in three runs as Washington (17-12, 4-7) racked up 16 hits in a 13-1 rout of Stanford (11-16, 0-8) in a Pac-12 game in Stanford, California.
Softball
In the second game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader, Whitworth scored twice in the seventh to claim a 10-9 win and earned a split with George Fox (24-6, 14-4) in Newberg, Oregon.
Whitworth (23-7, 14-4) fell 10-2 in six innings in the opener.
• Krystal Aubert hit a first-inning grand slam, Ali Aguilar had three hits and scored three runs and No. 20 Washington (33-9, 5-5) routed Stanford (16-21, 1-7) 13-2 in a Pac-12 game in Seattle.
Track and field
Danielle Darden took seventh place in the 100 meters in 11.99 seconds to lead the Washington State women at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California.
The Cougars also sent athletes to the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in San Francisco. Michael Williams led the group with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000. He finished in 14 minutes, 16.80 seconds.
Men’s golf
Community Colleges of Spokane shot a 14-over 302 in the second and final round and finished in third place at the Olympic Invitational in Bremerton.
The Sasquatch’s Tanner Kovacevich shot a 2-over 74 in the final round and finished tied for 10th at 7-over 151.
Olympic claimed the team title.
