Gonzaga men, women finish second at Erik Anderson Invitational

The Gonzaga men’s and women’s cross country teams both took second place Saturday afternoon at the Erik Anderson Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane.

GU’s Willie Milam, running unattached, claimed the top spot in the men’s race. He finished the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes. Dan Amann was fourth in 26:24.38 and Ned Fischer was fifth in 26:29.93.

Community Colleges of Spokane took sixth. CCS’ top finisher was Daniel Schofield (22nd; 27:17.14). Lewis & Clark won the men’s and women’s team titles.

Gonzaga’s Jessica Mildes, who ran unattached, was the top finisher in the women’s race. She finished the 5,000-meter course in 18:33.98.

Eastern Washington’s Catie Arrigoni, also running unattached, was third in 19:06.37. CC Spokane took third place and Whitworth was seventh.

• Drew Jordan took second place and the Washington State men earned the team title at the Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in Seattle.

Jordan finished the 8,000-meter course in 24:03 – 2 seconds behind Washington’s Aaron Nelson. Five other Washington State runners placed inside the top 10.

The WSU women, led by Abby Regan’s third-place finish, took second place. Washington claimed the team title. Regan completed the 5,000-meter course in 20:34.

The Whitworth women, competing in the open division, took seventh. The Pirates’ top finisher was Kellyn Roiko, who took 29th. The Whitworth men took 11th place and were led by Chris MacMurray’s 38th place finish.

• Navy had seven runners finish inside the top 10 and the Midshipmen beat Gonzaga at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane. Navy’s Stephen Schroeder claimed the title after finishing the 8,000-meter course in 25:04.25. GU’s Robert Walgren was second (25:10.72) and Troy Fraley was third (25:11.49).

• Sarah Reiter took first place and the Eastern Washington women and men both took team titles at the Big Sky Tri-Meet at Pier Park in Portland, Oregon. Reiter finished the 5,000-meter course in 17:42. EWU’s Katie Mahoney was fourth (18:05) and Paula Gil-Echevarria was 12th (18:36).

Idaho was led by freshman Sierra Speiker, who finished third in 17:48 – a personal best.

The Eagle men were led by Vince Hamilton, who finished the 8,000-meter course in 25:23. Idaho senior Cody Helbling won in 24:58.

Volleyball

Savannah Blinn had 13 kills and Gonzaga (9-2) swept Montana (0-12) in a nonconference match in Missoula, Montana. Scores were 25-22, 25-16, 29-27.

• Katie Rice had 17 kills and Moira McVicar added 35 assists and 21 digs as Puget Sound (2-9, 1-1) beat Whitworth (7-4, 0-2) in a Northwest Conference match in Tacoma. Scores were 25-17, 21-25, 25-19 and 25-23.

Men’s soccer

Jakob Granlund scored twice and Gonzaga beat UNLV (5-1-1) 4-2 in a nonconference match in Spokane.

• Linfield’s Dylan Leathers scored in the 77th minute to tie the match and the Wildcats (2-2-1, 0-0-1) played to a 1-all draw with Whitworth (5-0-1, 0-0-1) in a Northwest Conference opener.

Women’s soccer

Annelise Coxeff’s 59th-minute goal was the difference in Lewis & Clark’s (4-1-1, 2-0) 1-0 Northwest Conference win over Whitworth (1-4-1, 0-2) in Spokane.

Junior hockey

Jonny Marzec’s goal early in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Spokane Braves (3-1-0-0) a 2-1 KIJHL win over the Beaver Valley Nitehawks (0-3-1-1) at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in Spokane.
