Obituary: Powers, Dorothy R.
She was 93.
Dorothy spent 45 years at The Spokesman-Review in a distinguished career that included work as a feature writer, investiga-tive reporter, columnist, editorial page editor and associate editor.
The photo shown here is the portrait that accompanied her column in 1980s.
Dorothy was a native of Anaconda, MT, a proud graduate of the University of Montana and a devoted member of her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta.
Only days after graduating in 1943, she joined The Spokesman-Review staff and quickly became a fixture known for her accuracy, precision and ethics.
A page 1 tribute in the October 19 newspaper effectively captured the breadth of her award-winning career.
Indeed, her impact on the profession was perhaps more deep and sustained than any journalist in Spokane history.
Dorothy was preceded in death by husband of 65 years, Elwood Powers, who passed away in 2011.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life has been scheduled on Wednesday, November 5, 11 a.m., at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th, Spokane.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Humane Society, 6607 N. Havana, Spokane, WA 99217, or the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, 2316 W. First, Spokane, WA 99201.
