Yogi Teevens hired at WSU

Yogi Teevens has joined the Washington State track and field coaching staff and will oversee the sprinters and horizontal jumpers, the school announced Wednesday.

Teevens comes to Pullman from Utah State where she was an assistant for four years.

Teevens spent 15 seasons at the University of Idaho (1996-2010), starting as the women’s head coach but was promoted to co-head coach of the men’s and women’s programs with Wayne Phipps for 11 years. Phipps is the new head coach at WSU. Teevens was the Big West women’s track and field coach of the year in 2001 and 2003.

Baseball

Former Washington State outfielder Kyle Johnson, a Post Falls native who plays for the Double-A Binghamton Mets, played in the Eastern League All-Star game on Wednesday night in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and went 2 for 2 for the East team.

Entering the weekend, Johnson was batting .287 with 19 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 36 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

As a four-year letter-winner at WSU from 2009-12, Johnson was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2012 draft and later traded to the New York Mets.

In three years as a professional player, Johnson is batting .286 with 59 stolen bases in 228 games.

Basketball

Former Idaho women’s basketball player Alyssa Charlston has signed a professional contract to play for a team in Steinsel, Luxembourg.

Charlston, of Sammamish, Washington, set an Idaho record by playing in 130 consecutive games. She finished fifth all-time in scoring (1,587 points), fourth in blocks (128) and rebounds (855) and tied for 10th in 3-pointers (95).

Amicale Steinsel finished sixth out of eight teams last year in the Luxembourg Total League.

• Incoming Washington State freshman Pinelopi Pavlopoulou has been selected to play for the Under-18 Greece national team this summer.

Pavlopoulou, of Athens, previously played for the U16 squad in 2011 and 2012. The 5-foot-8 guard also played for the U18 and U20 teams last summer.

She will arrive in Pullman in August.

Golf

Eastern Washington announced the commitment of a transfer and two high school seniors to join the team.

Brooklyn Kraakman, of Deroche, British Columbia, joins the Eagles after two years at Alabama State.

A two-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection, Kraakman led Alabama State to consecutive conference titles in 2013 and 2014. As a sophomore, she finished fourth at the SWAC Championship and tied for 55th at the NCAA East Region Championship, the best finish in Alabama State history.

She joins Kimberlie Miyamoto, of Kahului, Hawaii, and JoAnna Leete, of Oak Harbor, Washington, who have committed to join the team.

Soccer

Sofia Anker-Kofoed signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Washington State this fall. She was a member of Sweden’s U17 and U19 national teams. The 2012 U19 team won the UEFA Women’s U19 championship. She is currently playing for FC Rosengard in the Damallsvenskan League, which plays in Sweden’s highest division.

Softball

The Spokane women’s softball team Batters Brigade Spokane recently won for the sixth straight time at the 41st annual Goosetown Men’s and Women’s “Best In the West” ASA tournament in Anaconda, Montana.

Ashley Fargher was chosen MVP and Tia Vesser, Aimee Fitting and Hannah Shelley were named to the all-tournament team.

Swimming

The Washington State team has received the Team Scholar All-America Award from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Cougars posted a spring semester GPA of 3.38, which was second-best in the Pac-12 behind Arizona.

In addition to the team award, five swimmers also received the CSCAA honorable mention scholar All-America recognition. They are Emma Johansson; Ali Mand; Loree Olson; Kelly Tannhauser and Presley Wetterstrom.

Tennis

Gonzaga senior Kylie Peek and doubles partner Kassidy Jump of Arizona State won the ITA Northern California Summer Circuit women’s doubles title.

Peek and Jump defeated Francis Dean and Christiana Ferrari, who both attend the University of the Pacific.

Also, incoming GU freshman Alex Bourguignon recently won the Girls 18 Singles division at the Rick Macci Summer Supers Level 6 tournament in Boca Raton, Florida. In the final, Bourguignon defeated Amber Policare, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 45 recruit by tennisrecruiting.net.
